Seeking Young Adult Peacemaker for free trip to Israel/Palestine
DENTON, Texas – A full scholarship is being offered for a young adult (18-30) to accompany a peacemaking trip, sponsored by Trinity Presbyterian Church of Denton, Texas, and led by Rev. Craig Hunter.
The trip provides a rare opportunity both to visit Biblical/historical sites in the region as well as to visit with peace and justice organizations. The group will lodge in Bethlehem, the Galilee, and Jerusalem while visiting places such as Nazareth, the Dead Sea, Hebron, and Caesarea. As peacemakers, the group will worship with local Christians and visit with peace and justice organizations such as Sabeel, the Carter Center, the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, B’tSelem (The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories), the Middle East Council of Churches, and the International Center of Bethlehem. The itinerary will be flexible to accommodate events on the ground.
“Participants will come away with a deeper appreciation of the context in which our faith was born,” says Rev. Hunter, who teaches frequently on the subject of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and has lived and worked in the region for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A). Rev. Hunter is a seasoned trip leader and has led previous trips to the region. This trip has been endorsed by the Israel/Palestine Mission Network of the PC(USA) [theIPMN.org] and by Douglas Dicks, the denomination’s regional liaison and mission co-worker.
Interested young adults should write an essay of no more than 500 words on “Why peace and justice in Israel/Palestine is important and how I hope to make a difference.” Submissions should be sent by email to the pastor and trip leader: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with contact info, age, occupation, and education. The deadline for submission is February 26th. The trip dates are May 18 to June 2, 2012.
Preference will be given to Presbyterians, but the scholarship is open to all young adults of faith across the country. The winner will be asked for a letter of endorsement from their pastor, session or seminary supporting this peacemaking pilgrimage. In return, the scholarship recipient will be asked to keep a blog during the trip and to speak to at least three groups about the experience upon their return.
This scholarship covers round-trip airfare, accommodation, entrance fees, honorariums, transportation, and breakfasts and dinners. Lunches, drinks, souvenirs, and tips are excluded. There are still spots available for other peacemakers to join the group at their own expense. See trip brochure
